Horticulture

Horticulture science can be divided into Pomology& Olericulture and Floriculture & Landscape. Pomology (cultivation of fruit and nut crops) & Olericulture (cultivation of vegetables) are one of the main concerns of the agro section from the expo “8th BAPA Food Pro Bangladesh 2020”. Climate, terrain and other regional variations have made Bangladesh rich in horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, potato, tropical tuber crops, mushroom, ornamental, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation crops and spices. At present, the agro sector is cultivating highly remunerative horticultural crops by advancing subsistence farming to alleviate poverty level, provide higher employment opportunity and nutritional security.

In Bangladesh, there are five Horticulture Research Centres are working under BARI of which the Central Station is located at Joydebpur and four other Regional Horticulture Stations are at Rahmatpur (Barisal), Hathazari (Chittatong), Akbarpur (Moalvibazar) and Nababgonj (Rajshahi). Presently these Research Centres are dealing with large number of research programs on fruits, vegetables and spices in order to enrich our farmers’ existing production technologies to meet the needs of the farmers to make better use of the natural resources and other inputs that are available to them.
